The biggest mistake we made when booking this hotel was to assume that the 5 star status in Cyprus matches up with 5 star hotels in the UK-it does not! When my wife and I booked the Vouni Palace, we were fully hoping for paradise and this is not what we received. Instead we received distinctly average accommodation, adequate facilities and acceptable staff.

The hotel was very modern which gave it that 'clean,' just built feel. It had some lavish features, particularly in the reception area. However, on closer inspection some areas were not that clean. It wasn't filthy but the rooms were dusty in places and the shower area was beginning to develop mould. You could probably accept that from a 2 or 3 star but not 5.

The pool area was very clean and well kept and the hotel's facilities were good. We found there to be just enough entertainment (it isn't really something we look for anyway.) The appearance of the hotel from the outside was quite cumbersome and the surrounding area wasn't a pretty picture of serenity, but it wasn't far from the more picturesque areas of Kyrenia.

We paid for bed and breakfast and the breakfast offered a fair variety of dishes. It was well cooked, fresh and tasty.

The staff at the hotel were relatively friendly but you kind of got the feeling that they believed the hotel was higher class than it actually was and had a slightly snobbish tone. Despite this, we had no problems with them and they were perfectly attentive when they needed to be.

I can't overly criticise this hotel but it just didn't live up to expectations. If it perhaps dropped a star then guests probably wouldn't feel so disappointed.
