If you arrived at this 5 star hotel anywhere else in Europe in shirts and flip-flops, they'd throw you out. The Colony is a top notch hotel with great service, and at prices you'd pay for a grotty 3 star in central London. Amazing!

OK, beyond the price, the Colony feels like a top hotel. It's the real deal; well-schooled staff happy to help carry your bags and open doors, suitably palatial decor beyond the grand entrance, spacious rooms, the lot. The hotel was restored from an old building, and clearly a lot of money had been spent. The rooftop pool looks cool, and not too deep, so it stays warm. There's also a spa and a gym, massage service and - a casino. Ah, now it's beginning to make sense...

Casinos seem to drive many of the hotels in North Cyprus, but here we felt the casino really was just part of the facilities, not the main attraction. There's no pressure to gamble at all, and I even think some guests were unaware it even existed.

We splashed out (relatively speaking) on a Club room with a queen size bed, and a bathroom much bigger than our one back in London. (Actually, any bathrooms is bigger than ours...) Spotlessly clean, it was really roomy, an the pay movie selection made up for the many Turkish tv channels.

All dinner we ate there (4) were superb, and the buffet breakfast was great, but it was dead easy to wander out into Kyrenia and choose from streets lined with great restaurants serving everything from kebabs to fish so fresh it almost swam off the plate. Drinks at the hotel were expensive, but that's usual in a 5 star hotel. We found the local bars to be friendly, lively and a lot cheaper.
