Bellapais Monastery Village Review - 3 of 65 Reviews
This is a hotel review for Bellapais Monastery Village in Kyrenia, North Cyprus
“Needs some attention”
The Bellapais Monastery Village has a good location, with views down to the coast and attentive staff,, but it's time for some overdue maintenance. My shower had ceiling paint that was peeling, there were cracked tiles on some of the many steps, and no wifi anywhere. Poor water pressure meant you had more of a dribble than a shower in the mornings. To be fair, our room was clean and tidy, and the air con was surprisingly effective, but not not five star standard by European standards. I suspect the well-kept grounds got far more maintenance than the rooms!
Breakfast was very 'English' and included instant coffee - yuck! Dinner was much better and served with pride, and not a buffet, thanks goodness. Dishes were well cooked, and my steak was excellent. Drinsk were at UK prices, even the local wine. If you miss the free bus down, a taxi into Kyrenia is about £6, which is not too bad, and means you can go into Kyrenia for a meal without breaking the bank. (Important to a Yorkshireman lkike me!)
Bellapais itslef is a charming village, but becomes very busy when the tour buses arrive. The ruins of Bellapais Abbey is best seen in the cool of the evening, when the tourists have gone back down the mountain. Luckily, the hotel is removed from the worst of the North Cyprus building explosion which is happening down on the coast, so it's quiet both during the day and at night.
A nice hotel, not five star, but the food and location lift it above average.
