This is a hotel review for Palm Beach Hotel in Famagusta, North Cyprus
“Living on past glories”
If you want European five star luxury, don't expect it at the so-called five star Palm Beach at Famagusta. This hotel must be living on past glories to have that rating. My room was clean and an OK size, but the balcony overlooking the sea was small. There was no much drawer space for storing clothes, and the air conditioning underpowered. There were free toiletries and free use of a wall safe, but precious little else in the way of five-star extras, apart from the usual overpriced mini bar. Everything looked tired, the carpet badly needed replacing, and the bathroom tiles were in very poor condition.
Having said that, the hotel staff are very friendly, and the hotel is quiet at night. (No cheesy 'entertainment', hoorah.) Breakfast is good with the emphasis on eggs, and dinner OK if a little uninspired. We ate out for most meals, and found the local restaurants in the nearby square good for a snack lunch, and walked into old Famagusta for dinner. (Take a taxi back - too dark to walk and TRNC roads are not designed for pedestrians!) The beach was lovely, and it was warm enough to sit out so long as the wind didn't blow too hard!
Apparently the hotel is to be renovated over the winter, but there is a lot of basic work to do if its to rise above a four star.
Liked — beach
Disliked — poor standard of rooms
