This is a hotel review for Merit Park Hotel in Kyrenia, North Cyprus
“A pretty decent all rounder for a great rate”
I am required as part of my job to visit Kyrenia once or twice a year to liaise with some business partners of my boss (it's nothing exciting, so I won't bore you with the details). Typically I'll stay for four or five nights over a weekend so that I can make the most of the time spent travelling once our business is concluded, and on this occasion my boss booked me into the Mercure Hotel for the first time. Whenever I come to north cyprus I always book hotes through www.gonorthcyprus.com for ease and local knowledge.
The reviews elsewhere on the internet were very mixed, so I was a little apprehensive about my stay prior to arrival, but decided to trust the booking agent. However, it looked nice enough when I got there and received a fairly warm welcome from the reception staff so no problems there. My room was fitted out sparingly, but everything you'd need for a stay was present so whilst there was no great cause for joy, there was also no reason to complain. This would become a theme where my opinions of the Mercure were concerned. The view was very nice though, it has to be said, and luckily the air-conditioning worked well.
I was appreciative of the all-inclusive offerings, which allowed constant access to free food and drink at all times of night and day (meaning I could leave my credit card safe back in the hotel room- a relief considering I lost it during my last visit) but the food was really quite average I'd say. There was a very lively atmosphere by the poolside most of the time, which I had limited time to enjoy but was nice nonetheless.
As I travel a lot, I get to use many, many hotel gymnasiums and as you can imagine many of them are beyond poor. This one was not so- in fact it was one of the better gyms I've used during my visits to Cyprus and I actually preferred spending time there than in my room bizarrely.
One of the reviews I read compared the Mercure to a budget take on a luxury hotel and I'm inclined to agree with that- the end result is perfectly good, but I would be a tad disappointed if I booked a family holiday there expecting the best Kyrenia has to offer- there are definitely some actual luxury resorts available that would make the Mercure look pedestrian by comparison.
