The Mercure is a really popular hotel in North Cyprus, and that's both a blessing and a curse if you want to come here for a holiday.

I loved the setting as soon as we arrived, since the hotel sits proud on a headland, so our sea view room really did overlook the sea. The hotel has a big swimming pool with a bridge over it, plus its own patch of beach on the nearby bay, complete with beach bar service. It was bliss just to lie back and enjoy the sunshine, the sand, the attentive service, the quiet (apart from the Turkish musak at one end of the pool), despite this being a big hotel with over 250 rooms.

Unfortunately, the weekend then arrived, and with it loads of families with noisy kids who completely took over the pool. These were not hotel guests but people who paid to come in, pushing the pool facilities to overload and resulting in the Mercure changing overnight from relaxing hotel to holiday camp! In the end, I resorted to the indoor pool for a bit of swimming space, which seemed a shame with all that sunshine outside. I must confess that the next day we escaped in a hire car to the cool of the mountains, as most of North Cyprus seemed to be on the beaches or in our pool!

Inside the hotel is plush and glam, lost of plush sofas, and glass roofs flooding it with light. Our room was nice if not huge, and as comfortable as needs be when all you do is sleep. The air conditioning was very efficient, thank goodness. Breakfast on the terrace was lovely, and generally the hotel food was good, although we were B&B so we ate out most evenings - local tavernas are very friendly and a lot cheaper.

Overall, a lovely place to stay, except on holiday weekends…
