This is a hotel review for Malpas Hotel in Kyrenia, North Cyprus
“Nice hotel, not a 5* though.”
We stayed at the Malpas hotel for 4 nights on their special offer terms, which was free dinner. For the money we paid, it was extremely good value. The initial impression of the hotel was very good. The reception area was very impressive. The room was medium sized and very clean, however was a little tired. The food, which was a buffet at both breakfast and dinner was very good. We are non-meat eaters and found plenty of choice. A downside we found was an expensive bar, however being rated a 5* I suppose its something to be expected.
The position of the hotel is open to debate. It is on the outskirts of the village of Catalkoy, situated in its own grounds. There are no bars etc within walking distance, so anyone wanting to leave the hotel in the evening for a drink etc would have to drive. It is a 5 mile (approx) drive to Kyrenia so for sightseeing, the car needs to come out.
There is a casino on site, which we found very smokey. Never having been in a casino before and wanting to have a (small!) flutter, we found ourselves like fish out of water. There was no welcoming setup for total beginners, I think there is a need for introduction sessions in their quiet periods to acquaint beginners like us on how a casino works. Overall a good hotel, however by european standards we would rate this a 4* hotel.
Liked — Value for money, food.
Disliked — Expensive bar, position.
