When my partner said he had booked a hotel with a casino in North Cyprus for our summer holiday, I wasn't very keen. However, the Malpas turned out to be an excellent 5 star hotel, way above my expectations, and a real find for a good value holiday in June.

The sun shone, the pool was nearly empty, there were sunbeds to spare, the staff had time to chat AND make sure you got a cold drink when you asked, and the whole atmosphere was very welcoming. The pool area is raised up so you get good views out to sea, even across the roofs of the villas in the grounds. These looked nice for families or those who wanted a bit of privacy - we were in the main hotel which I think was much better since everything was so close at hand.

The restaurant was good and we could sit outside to eat. The hotel is used by locals for big celebrations and weddings, and they set tables out by the pool area which looks lovely. I did worry that this might be noisy but not at all - we were even invited to join in the dancing later in the evening!

There was a free shuttle bus down to the hotel's beach club (the hotel is not on the coast) and the day we went we had it practically to ourselves. Sitting on the decking under a sun umbrella, reading a book and listening to the waves - perfect for just chilling out and forgetting the doom and gloom of the UK news.

We hired a car through reception for two days, which gave us a better view of what North Cyprus is like. I loved our day in the mountains amongst the cool pine forests and ruined Crusader castles, although how anyone has the sheer courage to paraglide down from there to the coast is beyond me. Gerry preferred our day at ancient Salamis, a bit of a hot drive across the country, but worth it for an ancient history nut like him especially as he got to swim in the sea afterwards over the ancient harbour.

I would definitely go back to North Cyprus and stay again at the Malpas, and this time explore more of the western part by car.
