This is a hotel review for Malpas Hotel in Kyrenia, North Cyprus
“Lovely January break”
We enjoyed a post Xmas break at the Malpas Hotel, and very much enjoyed our stay, thanks to kind staff, a well-kept modern hotel and some very welcome sunshine. We knew from looking at the hotel's reviews in advance that it was out of town, so we hired a car at the airport (Ercan) and actually used it more than we originally thought. January is certainly not pool or beach weather, and a car meant we could explore more of North Cyprus, as the roads were virtually empty of other tourist traffic.
Our room was well decorated in an international style, very clean, comfortable and had a balcony, and central heating that was perhaps a little too enthusiastic, if anything. The rest of the hotel sparkled and gleamed, and never seemed busy, even when we had a meeting/conference on one day and a private party one night. (We didn't hear a thing in our room either.)
The food was good in the main restaurant and on the advice of someone we met in the bar one night, we also tried the a la carte restaurant which was excellent. We also ate out for two nights, but it was a bit of a hunt to find non-hotel restaurants open in January, and meant we ended up in or near Kyrenia both times.
The spa was a real plus for a winter holiday, and we both spent time sitting around the inside pool on the sofas, the Turkish bath or the sauna. I thought the treatments were quite highly priced, but then again I don't go to many top UK spas. We didn't try the gym (!) as we preferred to walk along some of the deserted public beaches, avoiding the rubbish washed up on some, it has to be said. (My hint for North Cyprus walking in January - make sure you pack a windproof anorak!)
The Malpas is a nice hotel for a gentle winter stay if you are happy to just relax and let the days flow by. I guess those seeking thrills and excitement might want to go more in season, but then again there's always the casino downstairs, which was a fun night 'out' for us, and we even came away the richer - by the grand total of £5!
Liked — clean hotel, peace & quiet, views from balcony
Disliked — spa treatment prices
