This is a hotel review for Malpas Hotel in Kyrenia, North Cyprus
“For the 2nd time this year!”
We visited the Malpas twice this year, which whilst shamelessly indulgent of us given the current economic situation and all, was definitely worth doing. We're not in the habit of taking multiple holidays in a year (sometimes not even one) but a pay rise coupled with some unexpected free time made this the perfect opportunity and we were so impressed by our first stay that it became a bit of a no brainer.
Getting from our rooms to the main hotel and bar area necessitated a walk up a relatively steep hill on both occasions since they were in the annexe building- not a problem for us as we're (thankfully) still just on the right side of middle age, but it's probably worth considering requesting a more accessible room if you have any trouble getting around at all.
Whilst the entire place was very clean, I thought that some redecoration and refurbishment could be in order. Over the course of several years the massive footfall a hotel's common areas suffer through takes its toll and in this case has worn the carpets quite badly.
The food we ate in the hotel was very consistent and offered a wide range of dishes to suit most tastes. More importantly (at least for me) it was kept nice and hot and replaced regularly by the hotel's staff who, by the way, did a stand-up job during our time at the Malpas and should be commended for their helpfulness.
Whilst there was some entertainment on in the hotel most nights, it might be a little slow and low key for most people so we found a good alternative was to grab a few drinks early on in the evening at the hotel and then venture out into central Kyrenia by taxi (the journey wasn't particularly long and the fares were generally affordable for most I should imagine).
Whilst this isn't quite a five star hotel by most European standards I think it's a strong four star with big potential if the few negatives I've pointed out are addressed during the (hopefully impending) refurbishment.
Liked — consistently good food in the hotel
Disliked — could do with a little refurb in places
