“A wonderful escape from the winter weather”

March in the UK is still grey, cold and miserable, and it's a treat to wake up to sunshine every day. We always take a winter break around this time of year and fancied North Cyprus for a change. We were told to use the gonorthcyprus website and we are so glad we did. Not having been before we rang the free number and spoke to a lovely guy who couldn't have been more helpful. He answered all our questions about a couple of hotels we were interested in and booked the Bellapais Gardens on the spot.

We knew we had made the right choice from the minute we arrived. The grounds are lovely and full of orange trees laden with fruit. The check in was very quick and our room was lovely with a gorgeous view over the Med. My husband is a bit of a culture vulture and was delighted when he discovered, thanks to Go Cyprus, that the hotel nestled against the walls of Bellapais' 13th century abbey. This lovely village in the Kyrenia mountains was the home of writer Lawrence Durrell while he was writing his celebrate book on life in Cyprus “Bitter Lemons”.

The lovely port of Kyrenia is within walking distance, or you can get a taxi which is very cheap and only takes a couple of minutes. Sitting by the harbour eating lunch in the warmth of the February sun was just the tonic we needed, and we did this several times during our stay.

The hotel isn't posh or swanky but is spotlessly clean and family run so you get the attention to detail and personality that is lacking in corporate chains.

The view from the restaurant is stunning, the food excellent and there is never service without a smile. Our local airport doesn't fly to the north so we flew to Larnaca. This proved to be no problem at all. We were at the hotel within an hour of getting our bags and there was only a quick scan of our passports at the border. We have already decided that next March's break will be at Bellapais Gardens, it has everything you could want and more.
