The Dome Hotel is in a great location if you want to be right by the Venetian harbour but not quite on top of it. I stayed in a sea-view room on the ground floor and the view and the balcony was just wonderful and I'd strongly recommend these rooms for the view alone. In the summer, it would be perfect for a quiet glass of wine with or without friends. The reception staff, with one exception, were very friendly, welcoming and helpful.

That for me is where the good points end. The room next door was separated by a dividing door which left little going on in the adjacent room to the imagination, though I did have an additional door I could close between the bathroom and the bedroom.

The sheets and pillows are washed with high-grade biological detergent. As someone with skin allergies in such environments, I was left pretty stranded when the receptionist at the time blatantly refused to have the sheets changed for non-biological washing powder and had to sleep in my clothes and take anti-histamines to survive.

The decor, in spite of its recent work, is tired and not in fitting with the history of the hotel. More trusthouse forte than historic hotel.

I missed breakfast most days, but on the day that I went, I stayed for five minutes and went instead to the harbour. The food was standard European breakfast, but terrible quality. The coffee was very poor, there were glasses and milk missing with one poor man running around trying to sort it out for everyone. The cooked food had been left for a while underneath the heaters, was greasy and was not fresh.

At £50 a night, I cannot complain. I got a good deal for the price, but with hindsight I would have stayed elsewhere, even with the view. I have travelled in Turkey and Cyprus a lot and I know that it can and has been done much better.
