This is a hotel review for Acapulco Beach Club Hotel in Kyrenia, North Cyprus
“Go out of season for a relaxing break in North Cyprus”
The Mediterranean is a great place for a beach holiday - if it weren't for the crowds in the summer. Which is why I always go early in the season to beach resort hotels - you get the sun but not the heat, the sand but not the crowds, and peace instead of endless noise from other people's untamed kids.
So I had no hesitation in booking the Acapulco in that blissful time between Easter and summer half term, when the sun shines on those who are not tied to school holiday timetables! At this time of year, the staff are all relaxed and fresh, rather than run ragged, the excellent beach is pretty much empty, and the swimming pools swimmable, especially the warmer inside pool. My room in the main hotel was spotlessly clean, tidy and felt fresh.
The breakfast buffet was remarkably generous, and with lots to choose from. Same in the evening, with a buffet dinner all you can eat, but I also ate out at a couple of local restaurants (taxis are cheap and always available). Hotel bars were hotel-standard expensive, but there was always someone to discuss either sport or politics with over a beer or six.
I spent a morning in the spa, which did my stress levels and pores blocked with London grime no end of good, but did dent the wallet somewhat. Hired a car for two days through hotel reception, which was remarkably good value and meant I could see more of North Cyprus (the hotel is a bit stuck out on the coast). Old Kyrenia was small but with good bars round the old harbour, and enormous kebabs from Niazi's restaurant. Famagusta's great walls were impressive and eating in the old town was very cheap. Came back via Salamis ruins, which are badly labelled and meant nothing to me, so ended up having a beer in nearby Bogaz, which felt more like the 'authentic' North Cyprus experience.
Although I wouldn't say my holiday was dirt cheap, it was certainly a lot less than if I'd been in south Cyprus and paying in Euros instead of Turkish lira.
Liked — no crowds
Disliked — spa treatment costs
