on arrival, we were informed that the hotel was overbooked but there would be a room available the next day. arrangements had been made for us to stay overnight at a nearby hotel and we were assured that it was of the same standard. It was not, for although the pool area was pleasant, the restaurant area was tired and dingy, and the accommodation had a very small bathroom with only just enough room for a sink, lavatory and shower, and badly needed to be updated and decorated. we were offered the value of the night but we had lost a day of our holiday together with the inconvienience and this was not enough. further compensation was agreed with a member of the board of the hotel but at the end of the week the hotel insisted that the further compensation was instead of the free overnight originally offered. we did not agree and eventually the hotel accepted our assertion.

The room, view, public rooms, swimming pool area, grounds and overall standard of food and service, was high. However, for a 5-star hotel, we would have expected complete waiter service in the evening rather than just for wine, and there was a marked lack of emphasis on fish either hot or cold for hors d'ouvres and only generally one unintersting fish option for the main course.
