When discussing a hotel, particularly those in the Mediterranean, age isn't often considered to be a selling point. In the case of the Dome Hotel in Kyrenia, however, it becomes a very important characteristic: when it was built around 70 years ago, the hotel secured for itself one of the finest pieces of real estate I've ever visited.

When I booked up with Gary at Go North Cyprus in November (look them up, they were a great help) I had already seen pictures of the place, surrounded as it is on three sides by the sea itself, which were impressive enough. Seeing a picture and actually being there in the flesh are rather different things though. The front of The Dome looks out onto a fairly nice, but average Cypriot town street. It enjoys close proximity to the sea front and Kyrenia Castle, obviously, but at the rear of the hotel is the real show stopper.

I'm not normally too fussed about sun loungers, but in this case (when a particularly fit man or woman could conceivably jump from one into the pool, and from there to the sea, and back again) I will make an exception. This area is mostly protected from view of the main street by the hotel which very nearly gives it the feel of a private island of sorts.

This feature gives The Dome the added bonus of many, many sea-view rooms, of which I was lucky enough to get one. The only real downside to this was that in all my excitement about the location I drank a little too much and found out quickly that the curtains were insufficient to stop the Cypriot morning sun from initiating my hangover. Thankfully the helpful (merciful?) staff were on hand to help me limp towards the breakfast buffet (cooked, continental, and local) that did a reasonable job of setting me straight.

As you can probably tell, I can't speak highly enough of this great destination. I will be visiting again, perhaps in the Summer.
