Dome Hotel Review - 18 of 93 Reviews

Before our holiday to North Cyprus, I decided to go on the Internet and look at some hotel reviews, which I had not done before. What surprised me was how people seemed to expect every hotel to be absolutely perfect! Any of us who used to book their holidays from printed brochure will be more than aware that hotel star ratings vary from country to country, and that what you see in the picture is always the best view of any hotel, resort or bedroom.

I booked the Dome Hotel well aware that this was an old hotel in the middle of Kyrenia town. I did not expect the bedrooms to be large, or have flat screen televisions, or for every room to have an uninterrupted view of the sea. I expected a comfortable room with a clean bathroom, some nice lounge areas, a sunny terrace to sit out on, waiters who would be as happy to serve us tea as expensive cocktails, and a short walk to the old harbour area. The Dome delivered all I wanted, and more.

Breakfast on the terrace was lovely, and while others complained about the lack of variety, it made me wonder how many guests there had EVER cooked an egg for breakfast back at home? Most mornings, I quite happily sat beside the natural rock pool and watched others swim in the sea below, without feeling the need to get wet myself.

My husband and I always enjoy eating at different restaurants each night, and there were plenty to choose from in the harbour area. Again, other guests moaned that the waiters at these restaurants were very 'pushy', but clearly they have never been shopping in an Egyptian souk!

I realise that anyone reading this might think that I am ancient and like Miss Marple, content to sit and knit. However, despite being old enough for free bus passes, my husband and I have travelled all over the world including Africa, India, and the Far East, and know that often the best hotels are not the new, fancy ones, but those who have history, elegance, and a good location. Let others book the seafront resort hotels, or brash casino hotels; we'll stick with the colonial comforts of The Dome and the delights of North Cyprus explored in a hire car, thank you.
