This is a hotel review for Almond Holiday Village in Kyrenia, North Cyprus
“Peace and tranquility in stunning garden setting”
My 22 year old son and I stayed here for one week, our first trip to Northern Cyprus. When we arrived we had been allocated a double bed by mistake, but the staff swiftly moved us to the villa next door, with twins, with no problem whatsoever. We opted for bed and breakfast as we wanted to try out the local restaurants but ate at the Almond a few times too, and the food was always excellent, fresh and of high quality. Delightful pool area, sadly rather cold, but I gather that is the norm in North Cyprus! My one gripe was that although we had a fridge in the room, and the kettle, there are strict rules about bringing in food from outside and we had wanted buy some local snacks, fruit and drinks to try, and maybe have a beer on our terrace etc, but if you wish to do that you have to purchase from the Bar or change to self catering. Again that seems to be normal practice in the resort generally, but if they wish to keep tourists coming they do need to relax that rule.
The staff were friendly, and we enjoyed visiting the ostriches, and the poor chained up dog who is waiting for a home. The resident hotel dog, Lucky and the cats also added to the charm of the place. If I was to ever visit North Cypris agin, I would stay at the Almond but would have a car for the whole time as it is rather off the beaten track for walking, and there is not much around the area, especially in the evenings. I do not think I will be likely to return to this part of the world though, generally speaking it is dirty and derelict, has very few real attractions, and you get the feeling that the Turks are happy to take or leave the tourists , they aren't rude or hostile, but they certainly don't go out of their way to please, (not the staff of the almond I must stress, they were great). Bad, or no planning controls have resulted in hotels and facilities , villas and apartments being built, or just half built here there and everywhere , with no logic, and the streets are strewn with rubbish and debris, or simply overgrown with weeds. It'll be Back to cruising for me.....
Liked — The Almond Hotel, quiet, peaceful, very well kept, nice food
Disliked — Litter, dirt, weeds, broken glass, a take it or leave it attitude of the locals
