I was due to go to North Cyprus with my husband and our 6 year old daughter. It was her first ever trip abroad so we wanted to make it as special as possible. We read the reviews about the Malpas Hotel and immediately thought that it was the right place to stay.

About a week before our departure, I received a phone call and was told that unfortunately there had been some problems with flooding at the Malpas and it was best to transfer to another hotel. This came as such an utter shock to us; we'd been so excited about the holiday. We'd even made a holiday book for our daughter to take with her; the front cover was a picture of the beautiful hotel she would be staying in.

Had we been told in advance we may have been able to come to terms with changing our hotel, however, to be told that your holiday needs to be completely changed within a week of going is incredibly traumatic. We were worried about taking a gamble with one of the other hotels we were offered as we had not had the time to look in to them thoroughly and didn't want to ruin the magical experience of a first holiday for our daughter.

I have since heard that the Malpas were cancelling several bookings due to them over-booking and that the story about the flooding is a possible lie. I am shocked and appalled at how a hotel can lie to its guests to cover its own mistakes. I would not trust booking with the hotel, it could happen to anyone, and it may be that they are given even less notice than us.
